It’s Been A While

I was just going through my WP installations to keep the updates up to date and realised it has been a while since I posted here.

Too many things have happened since my last post but the most recent events have been the purchasing of the Easy Member Pro developers licence.

I thought it was a good idea at the time and had great plans for building sites both for myself and for customers.

Unfortunately the owner sold the script and whilst the new owners have promised many improvements I haven’t seen much at all happening.

The current version is still usable and creates great membership sites but in my opinion you should never make false promises.

I have made quite a few sites for customers of my buddy Stu Stirling and the Complete Newbie Training theme seems to be popular. You can check out my template at .

Other membership sites I have built are:

I have also been busy running Stuart’s support and building other sites for his customers. This brings it’s own challenges and because most of the people who can’t build their own sites themselves have little computer experience there are numerous problems like just getting the correct information from them before I can make a start. It is the nature of the beast and I have just got to be patient and wait for them to respond.

Amazingly though, there are some who pay and don’t follow up by getting in touch and even after numerous emails from different email addresses hoping one will get through the spam filter they still don’t reply.

Well, that’s a brief explanation of what I am/have been up to and hopefully I will maintain my presence here as I originally intended to do.

It would be great if you let me know how your journey is going in the comments.

Have You Made Any Money Online Yet?

It’s only a matter of time yeh?

I know the feeling so don’t worry if you are struggling along.

One thing I can assure you of, is that if you are convinced that the solution to your success is just around the corner. The next miracle product you buy will be the one to make you a fortune then I am sorry, I don’t think I can help you!

You need to change your mindset and stop wasting money on stuff that doesn’t quite do what you hoped it would.

Sure, there are some great things for sale out there. WP Plugins for example are being sold in their thousands and the reason is they usually do what the sales page says.

I just wish I was techy minded enough to be able to create my own!

So, if you are struggling along and not making money yet I can offer you some advice from my experience. Here is a breakdown of what I feel you need or need to do to start to make money online:

  • Follow someone who has done what you want to do.
  • Create your own product to sell.
  • Build a list, preferably of buyers.
  • Build a relationship with your list and offer good information and recommendations.

Let’s go through the list and see if we can get you started towards making money online. Even if you have already made a little money these methods will add another string to your bow.

Follow Someone Who Has Done What You Want To Do:

Finding yourself a mentor, in my opinion is the best piece of advice that I or anyone else could offer you. It needs some thought though and is not something to rush into blindly. I had a bad experience with a so called ‘mentor’ many years ago. That’s a story for another day so we won’t dwell on it.

If you have been searching for success this won’t be the first time you have heard that you must follow someone who has done that, been there and produced the T Shirt.

So why haven’t you got a mentor yet?

If I may be so bold as to offer my opinion on why you haven’t got a mentor already I would say it was down to the cost.

A good enough reason if there ever was one and because of the mindset of most people not one that is easily overcome. It is a bit of a catch 22 situation.

Shelling out between $2,000 and $5,000+ upfront is a big ask for a lot of people and that is why the so called ‘Guru’s’ are making fortunes from us. We can’t afford a big outlay or we don’t want to take that risk but we can afford to buy that $47 cash producing piece of software that has just been released.

Even if it doesn’t work like the sales page says it would, surely we will get something from it, and anyway we can still afford to buy the onMH900442237e that’s coming out next week. Can’t we?

Fast forward 2 years down the line and take a look at where we are at!

We are no further on than we was 2 years ago. We have a hard drive full of great stuff but it has cost us between $2,000 and $5,000+ to get it. We are not making much if any money online but it’s only a matter of time!

If that scenario  rings any bells with you don’t let another 2 years go by. Do something about it now or you will learn the hard way just like I did!

After my first encounter with a mentor it took quite a leap of faith for me to sign up for another. It was by chance that I read an email from John Thornhill and found my way on to his coaching program. It cost at the time $4,000 and was I thought a bit expensive.

I think John has come to realize it was and now you can get better improved coaching for half the price. If you think you are ready for your own leap of faith you can check his current Partnership To Success Program out at

Create Your Own Product To Sell:

Creating your own product follows on nicely from my mentor advice above. Partnership To Success is all about product creation and when it is finished John will promote it to his huge list. This means your expenses so far are virtually guaranteed to be recouped.

If you decide you want to go it alone you still need to get some ‘Buy Now’ buttons in the marketplace or you will have to rely on affiliate offers.

Creating your own product doesn’t have to be as daunting as it might seem. You can get hold of great PLR products and turn them into your own product. You can easily put something for sale on JV Zoo once you have it finished.

You could even get some fresh PLR like the stuff that is created each month at PLR Monthly. They even provide sales and squeeze pages for you so if you wanted to go down that route you could have your first product for sale within hours.

Of course, it wouldn’t be unique as other members have access to it also but it is a start.

A great way to have your own product for sale is to purchase something with Master Resale Rights. Even better if the seller also gives you rights to edit it before you sell it.

For a good example of this take a look at This is something that John Thornhill and Dave Nicholson released to the public originally for $47 per month. A while ago they sold MRR to it and now I have it for sale on JV Zoo for $5.

Anyone who buys the product is given the opportunity to buy MRR for $17 which means they could have their own product for sale within hours again and this time it isn’t being given away all over like what happens to PLR products.

Also if you would like to earn 100% commissions on the front end and 50% on the upsell you can start by signing up at

It is best to sell your own stuff but sometimes selling things as an affiliate can bring huge rewards.

This brings me along to the next item on the agenda….

Build a List, Preferably of Buyers:

Building a list of only buyers would make the path to success so much easier than it is. Unfortunately building a list of buyers means you have to have something to sell. Do you see the recurring theme here?

You must get some ‘Buy Now’ buttons out there to build a list of buyers. In reality your list will consist of a mixture of buyers and freebie seekers and some that sit somewhere between the two.

It is however, imperative that at every opportunity you get as many email addresses as possible. Email marketing is not quite dead yet but it is getting harder to do.

Open rates and click through rates are in decline and it is harder than ever to get responsive subscribers on our lists. Having said that, building a list can still be a very productive way to earn money online.

When you are building your list it is important to keep buyers and freebie seekers in separate lists if you can. I use Aweber and by using automation rules I can set it to unsubscribe someone from one list when they subscribe to another.

Build a Relationship With Your List and Offer Good Information and Recommendations:

Once you start to build your list and your subscriber numbers increase it isn’t time to sit back and do nothing. You have to keep your subscribers interested in you and your emails and this can be a science in itself.

It is a good idea to offer your subscribers some great content and this doesn’t have to be a free gift every week. Good advice and information to help them is cool but don’t be afraid of throwing good offers in now and again.

People like to hear about whats happening and whats being released and if you recommend something and someone makes a purchase you make a commission and that is how you make money from your list.

Try to avoid the impersonal misleading emails if you can. Some marketers have a lot of success with this type of email but they have 100’s of thousands on their lists and don’t mind operating the churn and burn marketing strategy.

If you get anything from this post please let me know in the comments below.

Even if it is two years after you first read it and you just came back to thank me for saving you a fortune.

Find And Replace With Firefox

Have you installed the Firefox find and replace add on?

I just did and it saved me a lot of time with one of my Aweber lists.

Did you know that if you create a list in Aweber and don’t create a welcome email all subscribers will show as last message received 1001.

That’s not a problem until you decide to create a sequence of emails and you would like your current subscribers to see your new messages.

To enable all existing subscribers that show as last message received 1001 to receive your new message sequence you have to change 1001 to 0.

I just recently did that with a list of over 1,000 and it took a while. :) I then decided to create an autoresponder sequence to another list and it was another one that I created without a welcome message.

I had used ctrl f to find 1001 but there wasn’t a way to replace it so I did a quick search and found there was a Firefox add on that did the job.

The moral of this story is always create a welcome message in Aweber it will save you a lot of time later.

How To Speed Up Your WordPress Site

How To Speed Up Your WordPress Site

Recently I have been tearing my hair out trying to speed up one of my sites that wasn’t loading for ages. I deactivated every plugin one by one and whilst I was doing that I made a promise to myself – only install plugins which I need.

Strangely as if by magic I had an email from someone at Site Pro News. To be honest I don’t remember signing up for it and it could well have been spam.

Anyhow, there was a link to something I thought said list building but when I got there it was link building. I was just about to close the page when I saw a link to a video about how to optimise your WordPress Blog.

I had a look and you can too at

I only intalled the W3 Total Cache plugin, followed the instructions in the video and my site loaded much quicker.

I had given up somewhat with my Cycling site as the big G had fallen out with it and my visitors had reduced dramatically. Maybe the fact that nobody could get the page to load might have something to do with it aswell.

I am off now to check out the other tips in the video and one in particular about security seems a good place to start. I will let you know how I get on.

The body is strong but the mind is weak!

Recently I have had two holidays to look forward to. One I am just back from, which was a great week on the Norfolk Broads with my family and the next one at the end of this month is a lads trip to Benidorm.

Now getting back to my subject line. Whilst dreaming of our holidays my wife decided she would join Weight Watchers as she felt she had put on a little weight.

She even bought some scales and I said I would weigh myself but being an active gym goer, playing badminton and cycling there would be no problem.

“What the …. you have bought a dud set of scales” I said.

Obviously she hadn’t and I had put on almost 28 lb in 2 years and all whilst still exercising regularly.

So on the 22nd February 2012 my weight was 15 st 2 lb (I still haven’t got the hang of kg).

This is were the mind part comes in…

As my holidays and weight loss were now firmly in place in my mind, I found I was becoming less interested in my online activities.

I feel the reason for this is twofold.

Firstly I now had a fight with my weight which I wasn’t prepared to lose and secondly for a while now I haven’t felt I was getting anywhere online. I was working long hours and for very little reward.

A meeting with my accountant confirmed my fears that my online account was well and truly in the red.

Time to rethink my strategy and take a long look at where I had spent my money and what has and hasn’t worked.

After my next trip (if I survive) I will have a full evaluation and post here exactly what has happened and what I am doing to correct it.

Enough doom and gloom and back to my fitness regime.

A while ago I bought rights to a number of membership sites and one of them was about fitness.

As I have been going to the gym for years and probably in a rut I decided to give it a try

Following the principles of the early lessons I soon realized that I was probably doing too much cardio and not enough weights.

Anyway, I had to slightly adapt it to suit my cycling and badminton but 16 weeks later I have lost 23 lbs and that is with a week away when food and drink was not restricted.

So overall I am delighted with my fitness results and when I concentrate on my online efforts once again I will turn around what at this moment is rather disappointing but not yet terminal.

Watch this space!

Track Your Visitors With Statcounter

Do you know who visits your site and how they leave it?

There are many plugins that you can use to keep track of your visitors but the one I use is Statcounter.

The free version gives me all the stats I need and it is good to see that on one of my sites most people leave through an affiliate link or via an Adsense ad.

Take a look at this short video and you will see it in action on my Cycling site….

Even if you don’t like the look of Statcounter you should really use something to keep track of your visitor stats even if it is Awstats or Webalizer from your control panel.

Until the next KISS moment.

Can your site be penalized for duplicate content if the content is your own?

The answer is probably not the whole site but this post might not be ranked highly.

I will get to the point in a moment.

Recently I was talking to John Thornhill about where I should go from here with my online journey. It was during that conversation that I mentioned an article I once wrote called ‘How To Make Money Online – Don’t Be A Plate Spinner’ I asked him how he managed to keep all his many plates spinning.

Other than taking things day by day he says he just looks at the weeks calender at what needs doing, prioritize a little and then gets on with it.

He doesn’t always achieve everything at the times intended but more often than not everything is achieved by the end of the week.

It really doesn’t pay to get yourself all stressed out about getting everything done on time. Some things can wait and whilst it can feel like walking through treacle as long as you don’t sink you will be fine.

Now back to my article. I thought I would share it here. Even though it is 5 years old some of it is still relevant today……………..

You must have seen those guys who spin the plates on sticks.

One after another they get the plates spinning until there are around 20+ plates spinning, and with just the occasional spin they keep them going until the act is over.

If you are not careful, your attempts to make money online can be akin to the amateur plate spinner. If you don’t master the art of spinning your first plate, there is no point moving onto the next plate.

So, trying to spin six plates at once before you learn how to spin one will only end up with a lot of broken plates.

Whilst it is widely known that the best way of making money online is with Multiple Income Streams, if you don’t master your first ‘plate’, spinning two will not be easier.

To get an idea of how many potential ‘plates’ are out there, all you have to do is a quick search on Google for “How To Make Money Online” (with quotes) and you can then work your way through the 645,000 sites and 39 pages of sponsored links.

Even if you whittle it down to your top 10 money making ideas it is still a lot of ‘plates’ to start with.

I just did a quick search and just on the first page there is a wide mix of ways to make money.

Blogs, Niche Content Websites, Text Link Ads, Squidoo, Elance, Avon, Affiliate Programs and then you have got others like Adsense, Adwords, Surveys, Type At Home and many products claiming to be the next amazing cash producing formula.

My advice to anyone looking to make money online, would be to start their first ‘plate’ in an area that interests them.

Thoroughly research your subject and be wary of the many scams out there.

If you are considering purchasing a program or product, email the owner with any questions you may have about his product.

If he can’t be bothered answering your email, why should he get your money?

If you do a search for “product name + review” you will get plenty of results of review sites. Bear in mind that these are someones opinions and opinions differ from one person to another.

Another popular search term is “product name + scam” and the results again will throw up thousands of sites suggesting what you are thinking of buying is a scam.

This was a very clever sales technique which encouraged people to click on the ad to see if what they were thinking of buying was a scam.

You are then taken through a tried and tested sales pitch of doubt and then hope and are ultimately guided towards a sale.

I say it WAS a clever sales technique, because in my opinion it is being used too often by too many.

Another way to research your subject is through forums. For example a search for “affiliate marketing forums” will bring up thousands of results and you will find lots of things under discussion and no end of opinions on the product or program you are thinking of joining.

Whatever area you decide to start in, remember get your first ‘plate’ spinning before you add another and another and so on until your own multiple income streams are spinning along nicely.

One last bit of advice, and this is the most important part of this article. YOU MUST TAKE ACTION.

Nobody is going to do it for you, there is no e-book that magically produces money once read.

You are the master of your own destiny, set yourself goals and TAKE ACTION.

How To Add A Gravatar To Your Posts And Comments

If you have seen posts that have comments with the authors picture or an image other than a silhouette of a head and wondered how to do your own, this post is for you.

In my opinion it is best to use your own picture and not to hide behind an image of the devil or something. Unless of course you really are the devil.

People are more likely to associate with you if they can see your face and follow your link to your site.

It really is simple to have your own Gravatar and all you need is a picture of you and an email address.

The first thing you need to do is sign up at .

Click the link to sign up and you will see a screen like this

Just enter your email address and you will be taken to a screen explaining how to confirm your email.

You will then be asked to provide an image to use as your Gravatar and there are a number of ways you can do this.

You will then be given your options for you to provide a picture.

Once you locate your image you are then asked to crop it to how you would like it to show. If it is OK as it is just click ‘Crop and Finish’

The next screen is where you rate your picture. I don’t mean that you say “great picture I am gorgeous” or “I didn’t like how the wind made me look bald”

You select one of the options shown on-screen.

On the next screen you are asked to choose an image to use for your email address. You can also add more emails if you like and also more images.

The next time you post a comment anywhere that accepts Gravatars just use the email address you signed up with and your lovely self will be there for all to see.

I know you are itching to try it out so go on comment away………

30 Day Traffic Flow was created by me (Dave Whitworth) with a lot of help from John Thornhill.

I thought I would write this post to explain what it is and why it exists.

First off a little background to explain why 30 Day Traffic Flow was even thought of in the first place.

I won’t go too far back into my online activities. Suffice to say I have spent many thousands of dollars chasing the dream. For years I convinced myself it was a hobby and it was alright to buy product after product that promised riches.

I even got myself a mentor many years ago but it turned out I was producing his content for him on weekly Skype calls.

It put me off the internet scene for about two years and then recently I got an email from John Thornhill and that led me to a discounted coaching program which I realised was excellent content but I needed more.

I joined John’s Partnership To Success program and a part of that program involves product creation.

After a bit of brainstorming I decided to create a program to help people with their traffic generation.

Having built a number of sites and tried virtually every method of free traffic generation, I knew how frustrating it could be to get visitors to a website.

A while ago I created a simple spreadsheet to keep track of my activity and thought that it would be a good idea to develop this system into something that anyone could use to get targeted traffic to their site.

I am not a spreadsheet expert and was only able to produce the bare bones of a spreadsheet. My wife Christine is the design expert and a wiz with spreadsheets and databases. Also I am not sure how much it would cost to have someone develop the ‘Traffic Light System’ spreadsheet but I am sure it would cost a lot more than the course is selling for!

And so 30 Day Traffic Flow was born, my first proper creation and the start of things to come.

Having followed John’s training and having him and his sons Jamie and Alex to help has been invaluable. With weekly live training and access to everything John has ever produced, the fee for the course is probably the best value for your money you could get online.

Having been involved in Internet Marketing for a long time I was surprised to find that in some areas I was close to solving the riddle but in other areas I was going down the wrong path.

Hopefully I am now on the right path and I hope that this post has been of help to anyone who reads it.

My two three pieces of advice for you are:

  1. Buy 30 Day Traffic Flow :-)
  2. Get yourself a mentor who knows what they are talking about.
  3. Create your own product.

To Your Success

Can We Escape The Walls Of The Garden?

“Walled gardens” was a term used to describe the AOL and CompuServe services which tried to do everything for everyone in the early days of the internet.

Ultimately, they failed in their quest to dominate as smaller services took advantage of people not wishing to be tied up by the big boys.

Leaping right up to date and we have new walled gardens vying for pole position in the world of Social Networks.

There are a number of social networking sites and surely 2011 could be classed as the year of domination for some of the top dogs.

If you own a social networking site not only are you very rich but also very powerful. Facebook has around 800 million users around the world and more than half of them log in each day.

Facebook is so big I wouldn’t be surprised if they had their own currency soon!

Google Plus was launched in June and already has around 40 million users. A long way behind Facebook, but I feel the gap will start to close in the New Year. Whilst both Google and Facebook compete for basically the same audience it could make for interesting viewing for the neutral. If there is such a thing as a neutral that is!

The third big shooter is Twitter and it has ruffled a few feathers recently with some changes that didn’t appeal to everyone.

In my opinion Twitter are not too bothered about upsetting some of the old regime and are looking for a new generation of users.

It is my prediction for 2012 that Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter will be the big three players and will attempt to make their own ‘walled gardens’ more secure.

I think the gloves will be off and there will be lots more things like improved video chat, movies, music and lots more great content to keep you within their walls, unable to escape until you have satisfied their needs, or they yours.

So, with 2012 upon us, how will your garden grow?

Will you become entrapped inside the walled garden or will you have a little more freedom and still explore the World Wide Web as it was intended, following the well laid out links from place to place whilst keeping one eye on how the garden grows?
